”Tulin töihin Euroopan tilintarkastustuomioistuimeen vuonna 2006. Työskentelen tarkastajana koheesiopolitiikan ja vuotuisen tuloksellisuuskertomuksen parissa. Tuloksellisuuskertomuksessa arvioidaan EU:n ohjelmien tuottamaa lisäarvoa.

Tehtäviini kuuluu tarkastusten suunnittelua, näytön arviointia, monenlaisiin asiakirjoihin perehtymistä, raporttien laatimista sekä tarkastuskäyntejä viranomaisten ja edunsaajien luo eri EU-maihin. Työkielemme on pääasiassa englanti, mutta käytämme myös monia muita kieliä. Hyvät viestintä- ja organisointitaidot ovat työssäni välttämättömiä.

Akateeminen taustani on insinööritieteissä, ja olen opiskellut myös julkishallintoa. Lisäksi olen suorittanut sisäisten tarkastajien järjestön (IIA) CIA-tutkinnon ja maisterintutkinnon tarkastustoimien hallinnoinnin ja konsultoinnin alalla. Ennen Euroopan tilintarkastustuomioistuimeen saapumistani työskentelin projektipäällikkönä ja sisäisenä tarkastajana elinkeinoelämän organisaatioissa.”

What does an EU auditor do?

An EU auditor assures that taxpayer money is spent correctly and that it gives real value to EU citizens.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy the most is the different kinds of actions taken by the EU and that I get to audit them. Every day you get to learn something new, and I find that really exciting.

One tip for someone considering applying to the audit competition?

I would suggest getting to know the programs and the actions taken by the EU, getting sense of the overall picture of what’s done and how it’s enacted in the member states and across the world.

What does an EU auditor do?

At the European Court of Auditors, we are the guardians of the EU's finances. We conduct financial and performance audits to check if money is accounted for and if it's delivering true value. My job involves analysing complex programmes and meeting international partners to ensure EU support delivers real results, both inside and outside the Union. 

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I love the most is the tangible impact and the international scope. Recently, I audited health systems in Burundi and Zimbabwe, focusing on sustainability and coordination. It is incredibly rewarding to issue recommendations that directly improve how funding is allocated, knowing my work leads to better, lasting outcomes for people on the ground.

One tip for someone considering applying to the audit competition?

For this level, we need professionals who can think strategically about performance and risk. My tip is to study the EU financial regulation and read a few of our recent audit reports to understand our methodology and tone. If you want a career where your expertise drives real change, apply today.

What I enjoy the most is definitely interacting with the colleagues, with the auditee, having interviews with them and then helping them to deliver even more effective and efficient results.

I would say start preparing early, read the notice of competition, understand what the tests are about and then good luck! I’m sure you will make it!

Työskentelen tarkastajana Euroopan komissiossa, ja työni on hyvin kiinnostavaa ja antoisaa. Työni tavoitteena on varmistaa, että EU käyttää veronmaksajien rahoja oikein ja säädösten mukaisesti. Seuraan myös yleisemmällä tasolla, että järjestelmät toimivat moitteettomasti ja että sääntöjä noudatetaan.

Työni mielenkiintoisimpiin puoliin kuuluvat tarkastuskäynnit paikan päälle kohteisiin, joihin EU-tukea on myönnetty. Tämä tarkoittaa matkustamista eri EU-maihin ja toisinaan myös EU:n ulkopuolelle tutustumaan asioihin henkilökohtaisesti. Minusta on myös erittäin mielenkiintoista tehdä yhteistyötä Euroopan komission eri osastojen kanssa ja saada kuva komission työn koko kirjosta.
