„Ich bin seit 2006 beim Europäischen Rechnungshof. Als Prüfer beschäftige ich mich mit der Kohäsionspolitik und dem jährlichen Leistungsbericht, der eine Bilanz des Mehrwerts von EU-Programmen zieht.

Meine Zuständigkeiten umfassen die Prüfungsplanung, die Beurteilung von Nachweisen, die Überprüfung einer Fülle verschiedener Dokumente, die Abfassung von Berichten sowie Besuche vor Ort bei den Empfängern von Fördermitteln und den Behörden in den Mitgliedstaaten. Unsere Arbeitssprache ist hauptsächlich Englisch, aber wir sprechen auch eine Reihe anderer Sprachen. Kommunikationsfähigkeit und Organisationstalent sind in meinem Job entscheidend.

Ich habe ursprünglich Ingenieurwissenschaft studiert und anschließend öffentliche Verwaltung. Ich habe außerdem am Institute of Internal Auditors die Zertifizierung als Interner Rechnungsprüfer erworben und anschließend einen Master of Science in Prüfungsmanagement und Unternehmensberatung absolviert. Ehe ich zum Europäischen Rechnungshof kam, habe ich als Projektmanager und interner Prüfer bei Industrieunternehmen gearbeitet.“

What does an EU auditor do?

An EU auditor assures that taxpayer money is spent correctly and that it gives real value to EU citizens.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy the most is the different kinds of actions taken by the EU and that I get to audit them. Every day you get to learn something new, and I find that really exciting.

One tip for someone considering applying to the audit competition?

I would suggest getting to know the programs and the actions taken by the EU, getting sense of the overall picture of what’s done and how it’s enacted in the member states and across the world.

What does an EU auditor do?

At the European Court of Auditors, we are the guardians of the EU's finances. We conduct financial and performance audits to check if money is accounted for and if it's delivering true value. My job involves analysing complex programmes and meeting international partners to ensure EU support delivers real results, both inside and outside the Union. 

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I love the most is the tangible impact and the international scope. Recently, I audited health systems in Burundi and Zimbabwe, focusing on sustainability and coordination. It is incredibly rewarding to issue recommendations that directly improve how funding is allocated, knowing my work leads to better, lasting outcomes for people on the ground.

One tip for someone considering applying to the audit competition?

Ich bin Rechnungsprüfer bei der Europäischen Kommission – ein spannender und erfüllender Job. Unser wichtigstes Ziel ist es, die korrekte und rechtmäßige Verwendung der Steuergelder der EU-Bürger sicherzustellen. Ich bin außerdem für die Aufsicht zuständig und achte darauf, dass alle Systeme richtig funktionieren und die Regeln eingehalten werden.

Zu den interessantesten Dingen in meinem Job gehört die Interaktion mit den Empfängern von EU-Mitteln in allen Mitgliedstaaten (und darüber hinaus) bei den Prüfungen an Ort und Stelle. Genauso spannend ist die Zusammenarbeit mit Kollegen sämtlicher Abteilungen der EU-Kommission, weil wir Prüfer dadurch einen Überblick über sämtliche Tätigkeitsbereiche der Kommission erhalten.
