“Ik werk sinds 2006 als auditor bij de Europese Rekenkamer. Ik houd mij bezig met het cohesiebeleid en het jaarlijkse prestatieverslag, waarin de meerwaarde van EU-programma’s wordt beoordeeld.

Mijn taken omvatten de auditplanning, de beoordeling van bewijsmateriaal, de controle van een grote verscheidenheid aan documenten, het opstellen van verslagen en bezoeken aan autoriteiten en begunstigden in de lidstaten. Onze werktaal is vooral Engels, maar we spreken ook verschillende andere talen. Goede communicatieve en organisatorische vaardigheden zijn essentieel voor mijn baan.

Ik heb oorspronkelijk ingenieurswetenschappen gestudeerd, en daarna een studie openbaar bestuur gedaan. Ik heb bovendien bij het Institute of Internal Auditors een certificaat als intern controleur gehaald en vervolgens een Master of Science in auditmanagement en consultancy. Voordat ik bij de Europese Rekenkamer begon, werkte ik als projectmanager en intern controleur in industriële organisaties.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy the most is the different kinds of actions taken by the EU and that I get to audit them. Every day you get to learn something new, and I find that really exciting.

One tip for someone considering applying to the audit competition?

I would suggest getting to know the programs and the actions taken by the EU, getting sense of the overall picture of what’s done and how it’s enacted in the member states and across the world.

What does an EU auditor do?

At the European Court of Auditors, we are the guardians of the EU's finances. We conduct financial and performance audits to check if money is accounted for and if it's delivering true value. My job involves analysing complex programmes and meeting international partners to ensure EU support delivers real results, both inside and outside the Union. 

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I love the most is the tangible impact and the international scope. Recently, I audited health systems in Burundi and Zimbabwe, focusing on sustainability and coordination. It is incredibly rewarding to issue recommendations that directly improve how funding is allocated, knowing my work leads to better, lasting outcomes for people on the ground.

One tip for someone considering applying to the audit competition?

For this level, we need professionals who can think strategically about performance and risk. My tip is to study the EU financial regulation and read a few of our recent audit reports to understand our methodology and tone. If you want a career where your expertise drives real change, apply today.

What I enjoy the most is definitely interacting with the colleagues, with the auditee, having interviews with them and then helping them to deliver even more effective and efficient results.

I would say start preparing early, read the notice of competition, understand what the tests are about and then good luck! I’m sure you will make it!

Ik werk als auditor bij de Europese Commissie - een boeiende en bevredigende baan. Onze belangrijkste taak is ervoor te zorgen dat het geld van de Europese belastingbetaler correct en rechtmatig wordt besteed. Ik ben ook verantwoordelijk voor het toezicht, de goede werking van de systemen en de naleving van de regels.

Een van de meest interessante aspecten van mijn werk is de interactie met de begunstigden van EU-financiering in alle EU-landen (en zelfs daarbuiten) tijdens controles ter plaatse. Even fascinerend is de samenwerking met collega’s uit alle afdelingen van de Europese Commissie, want zo krijgen wij, auditors, een goed beeld van de activiteiten van de Europese Commissie.
