Eligibility requirements
To apply for a position within the EU institutions, candidates must meet a set of eligibility criteria. These vary depending on the type of role — such as permanent staff, temporary or contract staff, Seconded National Experts, or others.
The exact requirements are always specified in the relevant Notice of Competition (NoC), Call for Expressions of Interest for Contract staff selection procedures, or Vacancy Notice. Candidates should review these documents carefully before applying.
General requirements
In most cases, candidates must:
- Be citizens of an EU Member State and enjoy full rights as EU citizens
- Have fulfilled any obligations imposed under national laws concerning military service
- Meet the character requirements for the duties concerned
Additional criteria may apply depending on the position.
Language requirements
Candidates must have knowledge of at least two official EU languages at the level required for the selection procedure.
For linguistic profiles, knowledge of at least three languages is usually required.
Education and professional experience
Requirements for education and professional experience depend on the role and profile. As a general guide:
- AD (Administrator) roles and Contract Staff FG IV typically require a university degree. Most AD roles also require relevant professional experience, except entry-level AD5 positions.
- AST (Assistant) roles and Contract Staff FG I, II and III usually require secondary education. Depending on the role, relevant professional experience may also be required.
Always refer to the official notice for the full and exact eligibility criteria for each selection procedure.
