«Comecei a trabalhar no Tribunal de Contas Europeu em 2006. O meu trabalho de auditor prende-se com a política de coesão e com o relatório anual sobre a gestão e a execução do orçamento, que faz uma avaliação global da mais valia dos programas da UE.

As minhas funções incluem planear auditorias, avaliar elementos de provas, examinar uma grande variedade de documentos, redigir relatórios e fazer visitas no terreno às autoridades e beneficiários nos Estados-Membros. A nossa principal língua de trabalho é o inglês, mas também usamos outras línguas. Para o meu trabalho, é essencial ter boas competências de comunicação e de organização.

A minha formação académica inicial foi no domínio da engenharia, mas depois fiz estudos no domínio da Administração Pública. Também tenho uma qualificação de auditor interno certificado do Instituto de Auditores Internos e um mestrado em Gestão de Auditoria e Consultoria. Antes de entrar no Tribunal de Contas Europeu, fui gestor de projetos e auditor interno em várias organizações.»

What does an EU auditor do?

An EU auditor assures that taxpayer money is spent correctly and that it gives real value to EU citizens.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy the most is the different kinds of actions taken by the EU and that I get to audit them. Every day you get to learn something new, and I find that really exciting.

One tip for someone considering applying to the audit competition?

I would suggest getting to know the programs and the actions taken by the EU, getting sense of the overall picture of what’s done and how it’s enacted in the member states and across the world.

What does an EU auditor do?

At the European Court of Auditors, we are the guardians of the EU's finances. We conduct financial and performance audits to check if money is accounted for and if it's delivering true value. My job involves analysing complex programmes and meeting international partners to ensure EU support delivers real results, both inside and outside the Union. 

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I love the most is the tangible impact and the international scope. Recently, I audited health systems in Burundi and Zimbabwe, focusing on sustainability and coordination. It is incredibly rewarding to issue recommendations that directly improve how funding is allocated, knowing my work leads to better, lasting outcomes for people on the ground.

One tip for someone considering applying to the audit competition?

For this level, we need professionals who can think strategically about performance and risk. My tip is to study the EU financial regulation and read a few of our recent audit reports to understand our methodology and tone. If you want a career where your expertise drives real change, apply today.

Trabalho como auditor na Comissão Europeia, um lugar que considero muito estimulante e que me faz sentir realizado. O nosso principal objetivo é garantir que o dinheiro dos contribuintes europeus é devidamente utilizado e de acordo com a lei. Também exerço funções de supervisão, tendo em vista que os sistemas funcionam corretamente e que as regras aplicáveis são respeitadas.

Um dos aspetos mais interessantes do meu trabalho é a interação com os beneficiários de financiamentos da UE em todos os países da Europa (e mesmo fora desta), nomeadamente através de controlos no local. Trabalhar com colegas de todos os serviços da Comissão Europeia também é fascinante, uma vez que nos permite, enquanto auditores, ter uma visão geral das operações da Comissão Europeia.
