For me, Luxembourg offers a vibrant environment and enables career mobility across (and within) the EU institutions, without the need to relocate.
Have you stayed on the same position throughout your career in the EU Institutions?
Not at all. After passing my first EPSO competition, I started my journey in the EU institutions in 2005 as a secretary at the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission. Four years and another successful EPSO competition later, I became a translator in the same unit. In 2015, I finally got the job that I have today, which I enjoy immensely: an auditor at the European Court of Auditors. All three positions were based in Luxembourg.
What does your typical day look like in the European Court of Auditors?
For me, there is no typical day. Every day is different. I enjoy the variety the job offers. One day, I might sit in my office and work on documents, another day I might discuss audit work with colleagues or be on a spot visit in some member state. As I work in the performance audit, the people/team I work with might change every 3 months or 14 months, depending on whether I am responsible only for a small part of an audit or act as head of task for an audit task. The topics may also vary over the years; I have worked on topics/policies related to agriculture, energy, climate, etc. Working in the compliance audit in the European Court of Auditors often provides more stable teams and structure, but there can also be a variety in terms of countries to visit and measures to audit.
Does smallness of Luxembourg pose constraints?
It depends on the person and their preference. I see the smallness of Luxembourg as an advantage as it is usually easy to get from point A to Point B if you live in or near Luxembourg City. Of course, it comes with a higher rent than in Brussels. At the same time though, there is free public transport and many free events/concerts. Overall, for me, Luxembourg offers a vibrant environment and enables career mobility across (and within) the EU institutions, without the need to relocate.
