At the EU institutions, you can enjoy generous leave arrangements to support you at different stages of your professional and personal life.
| Annual leave | At least 24 days a year. Extra leave is granted depending on your age. If you are eligible for the expatriation allowance, you may also receive 2.5 days of leave to visit your home country. |
| Maternity leave | 20 weeks, starting up to 6 weeks before your child’s due date. The other parent is entitled to 10 days of leave. |
| Paternity leave | 10 days. 20 days can be granted if your child is disabled or seriously ill. |
| Other parent leave | Up to 6 months for each child, to be taken within the first 12 years after your child is born or adopted. During parental leave, you do not receive the base salary but instead receive a monthly allowance of €1 289.65 (or 50% of that amount if working half-time). You can also take an additional 6 months of leave for each child without any monthly allowance or pay. |
| Special family leave | This is available if you need to care for a family member in the event of a serious illness or death. |
| Leave on personal grounds (CCP) | If you are permanent staff, you can request leave on personal grounds. This may be granted for studying, caring for family or working outside the institutions. If you are a temporary or contract staff, you may also be able to take unpaid leave for a limited period. |
